By using the term “carelessness,” Fitzgerald describes a key theme in The Great Gatsby. Mainly, the term is used to describe actions done by people who are not concerned whether their statements and actions will hurt others. I believe this was done to inform the readers of the book on the dangers of conformity and carelessness. If one does not express him or herself, that person cannot grow into a complete human being.
