“Gender Stereotypes on Television”
Television is one industry that is most guilty of perpetrating gender stereotypes.
During prime time hours, men make up the vast majority of characters shown. Women
characters found on television at the same time are mainly in comedies, while men are
predominantly in dramas. This implicates that men should be taken seriously and women
should not. Another sharp gender-stereotypical contrast on television can be seen in

kid’s cartoon or a primetime show. Women, in particular, are
exposed to gender stereotypes on television causing negative understanding of gender
roles. Although many people do not agree with this portrayal of women on television, I
do not see it stopping anytime soon. Sex appeal through men and, especially, women is
what is popular in today’s society and as long as it stays popular and helps products sell,
it will not be stopped.
