In literature, imaginary means unreal and imaginative means what the writer produces. Explain what is meant by “literature does not reflect life, nor does it withdraw from it; it swallows it.”
I think what Frye was trying to say that literature does not reflect life, but rather life reflects literature. Writers and poets related to current issues and put them into literary work, for example Shakespeare probably had a very dramatic life, and he uses his daily experience and some imagination to created plays revolved around everyone.
