Freedom Rides
The Freedom Rides were organized by the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) to test the effectiveness of a 1960 supreme court decision, Boynton V. Virginia, which prohibited racial segregation in public areas that served interstate travelers.
On May 4th, 1961, a small interracial group of CORE members traveled in two buses to challenge southern segregated restrooms, waiting rooms, and restaurants in bus terminals between Washington D.C. and New Orleans. (Mont 1 ).

The Freedom Riders may not have finished their trip, but they made an important and lasting contribution to the civil rights movement.
Even though the Freedom Rides were along time ago, this Veterans Day people throughout the country will gather in Jackson, Mississippi to pay tribute to these brave American sons and daughters whose selfless acts of courage helped pave the way for others to continue on the road to Civil Rights in America. (Lisker 3).
