Rivera joined the the Communist party but when Rivera refused to give in to Stalin’s discipline he was expelled from the party. Yet Rivera remained true to communist ideals, which differed from Stalin’s totalitarianism. At the end of his life he rejoined the communist party. Rivera had an extrodiary range of knowlegde of Mexican art and history.
