No matter what one learns from a teacher, a parent, or a book, the only way to ever learn something is to experience it. All four characters were put in a situation that was unfamiliar to them. Their disorientation led to knowledge about survival. Lewis’s belief was disproved for Lewis but it inspired Ed. Everything about the body Lewis had told Ed was now put into effect. Ed realized that survival did depend on what the body can do. Both Lewis and Ed swapped beliefs with one another in the novel.
