Critical Analysis: Ernest Hemmingway
“The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber” is a fabulous short story written by Ernest
Hemingway which was published in 1936. The story is a tale that introduces a new technique
and style that Hemingway was not accustom to writing. Author Philip Young remarks that the
piece, “presents certain difficulties, ..., because of new approaches the author takes to his

Hemingway. Many comparisons can be made from the characters in the story to Ernest
Hemingway and those he has encountered in his journeys. The similarities can be seen in the
characters personalities, their physical appearance, and even their daily encounters. Ernest
Hemingway does a fabulous job incorporating the theme of facing fear and blending some of his
own personal experiences in with his work.
