For the most part during Jefferson's and Madison's presidencies they went against their views as strict constructionists. Each changed their view of the Constitution to either better assist the growth of their nation or themselves. Their extension of the parties was accurate during their terms in office supported by their actions. Jefferson expanded the land and passed trading acts, while Madison declared war in 1812, and passed a bill proved their broad constructionist.
