Both stories were about the Holocaust and the inner struggles of the Jews. Survival and death were major themes used throughout these books. They were shown through the loss of loved ones, especially when Elie lost his entire family to the concentration camps. Both families were separated and eventually died. The themes are pointed out through the constant torture of Jews in general.
