Alexander Calder Alexander Calder was born in Lawnton, a suburb of Philadelphia, on the date of July 22 1898. He was named Alexander after his father, Alexander Stirling Calder, and his grandfather Alexander Miline Calder. With all three of the Calder men being named Alexander, they needed something to set them apart from one another, so the youngest Alexander, developed the nickname Sandy. …upstate New York but he wasn’t drafted for war. Calder did many jobs such as magazine adviser, an effency engineer for a window sash-firm, a systems engineer at a department store. He also worked on a ship, but what I think is the most interesting is the job he had in West Virginia showing a motorized cultivator to clients, and one of his final jobs was at a logging camp on the west coast.
